IT Support for Construction Companies in NZ
Job sites, remote crews & tight deadlines — IT support that keeps up.
The crew’s on three sites today. The foreman’s phone just died. Your accounts payable inbox has a “new bank account” email from a subcontractor. And your biggest client just asked whether you’re cyber certified.
Construction IT is different. Not harder — different. The office is anywhere with a smoko truck. The team lives on their phones and tablets. Half the fraud attempts landing in your inbox are aimed at redirecting a real invoice. And every bigger head-contractor and council tender now asks about your cyber security before they let you on-site.
We look after construction, civil, and trades businesses across New Zealand — from three-person joinery shops to facilities-management groups running seven brands across multiple locations. Here’s what IT support built for construction actually looks like.
The four IT problems every NZ construction business hits
1. Getting internet & wifi onto active job sites
Fibre isn’t running to a fresh subdivision. The site trailer needs internet for the estimator, the site manager, and the crew’s phones. A cellular hotspot works — until three people are on Teams calls at once, or the site manager tries to upload a batch of photos to the shared drive.
We deploy proper 4G/5G routers with failover, UniFi wifi that reaches from the office to the far end of the yard, and a network that can handle the whole crew without dropping out mid-call. Same gear scales down for the site trailer and up for the head office — one relationship, one bill.
2. Managing the mobile fleet without losing your mind
Every foreman has a phone. Half your crew has a tablet in the cab. Someone’s iPhone gets left on a roof, someone else’s Android drowns in a concrete pour. What happens next matters more than the device itself — because there’s company data on it, and there might be someone else’s data too.
We roll out Microsoft Intune (mobile device management) across the fleet so that a lost or stolen device gets remotely wiped in minutes, not weeks. Company data stays company data — including when the device belongs to the employee (BYOD). And when someone leaves, their access disappears the day they hand back the ute keys.
3. Stopping invoice fraud before the money goes
Construction is the most targeted NZ industry for invoice fraud — because the payments are big, the subcontractor list is long, and the “new bank account” email looks completely normal. One accepted change costs an average NZ construction firm around $25,000 in irrecoverable funds.
Two fixes, both simple:
- Managed email security with proper SPF, DKIM & DMARC on your domain — so spoofed emails don’t reach the inbox in the first place
- A written verification process for accounts payable — every bank account change gets a phone call to a number your team already has, not the number in the email
We set both up as part of every managed-services engagement. It’s not glamorous, but it’s saved clients real money.
4. Passing the cyber certification your bigger clients now ask for
Head-contractors, councils, government tenders, larger insurers — they’ve all started asking whether you’re cyber certified before they let you on the pre-qualification list. The answer they want is SMB1001 — the cyber security standard built for SMBs in Australia & New Zealand. Gold (Level 3) is the tier most construction firms need.
Our LiveSecure Gold service takes you from “we haven’t really thought about it” to certified in three to six months. No jargon, no scare tactics — a certified assessor (that’s us) works through the 27 controls with you, fixes what needs fixing, and files the paperwork with the standards body. Read what SMB1001 Gold actually is, or take the free 2-minute readiness check to see where you stand.
What LiveSupport looks like for a construction firm
Our managed IT support (LiveSupport) is a fixed monthly cost per user + per device. What you get for it:
- A senior local team — not a call centre. Onsite when it matters, remote when it doesn’t.
- Every device managed, monitored & patched automatically — laptops, phones, tablets, site cameras, the office server if you still have one.
- Managed endpoint security (EDR + Microsoft Defender + Huntress) with someone watching 24/7. Not just “we installed antivirus”.
- Microsoft 365 done properly — email, files, Teams, SharePoint, all set up so the crew on site sees the same file as the estimator in the office.
- Backups you can actually restore from — tested every 90 days, not just crossed fingers.
- Site connectivity, mobile fleet & office network in one relationship — one number to call when anything goes down.
- Regular reporting — you can see what we’re doing, what’s changed, and where the risks are.
A real story (anonymised)
A Northland construction firm called us last year in the middle of a live invoice-fraud attempt. A convincing email from what looked like a regular subcontractor asked accounts to update the bank account before Friday’s payment run. Accounts were about to hit send — the invoice was for $47,000.
The email had cleared their inbox filter because their SPF and DMARC records weren’t set up. Their accounts team had no formal verification process. We got the payment stopped, then spent the next month locking down email authentication, rolling out a written bank-change verification process, moving them onto managed EDR, and starting them on SMB1001 Silver.
They’re on Gold now. And they’ve stopped seeing the invoice-fraud emails altogether.
Frequently asked questions
Do you work with construction firms across New Zealand, or just Northland?
Across New Zealand. We have teams in Whangārei, Auckland (North Shore & Mt Wellington), Wellington & Wanaka — so someone’s local to most job sites. Remote support covers the rest.
Can you handle mixed-device fleets — Windows office plus iPhones on site?
Yes. Every managed-services engagement includes device management for Windows, macOS, iOS & Android. One relationship covers the office laptops, the field tablets, and the crew phones.
What does managed IT actually cost for a construction firm?
Fixed monthly cost per user + per device — most Kiwi construction firms in the 15 to 60-user range land somewhere between $80 and $150 per user per month, depending on the plan tier and how many devices per person. We quote fixed & upfront after a free scoping call, so there are no surprises.
Do we need SMB1001 Gold certification to work with you?
No. Most clients start without any certification and grow into it — we build the roadmap as part of the onboarding. The certification is what your bigger customers and insurers ask for; the underlying controls are what actually protect the business.
What happens if a site’s internet drops out?
Depends on the setup we’ve deployed. Sites with a 4G/5G router failover switch automatically within seconds. Sites relying on a single connection go through our monitored ticket system — we’re aware before your team is, and we’re already on it.
Can we co-manage — we have someone in-house already?
Yes. Roughly a third of our client base runs co-managed — an in-house person or team, with IT Live adding security depth, cover when they’re away, and specialist tooling. We fit around what you have.
How do we start?
Free scoping call. We look at your current IT setup, what’s causing pain, and where the risks are — then send you a written recommendation and a fixed monthly quote. No obligation, and honestly, no pressure — if we’re not a fit we’ll tell you.
